FAA Investigating Incident At John Wayne Airport In Orange County, Calif. Pilots onboard United Airlines flight 589 preparing for landing Tuesday at John Wayne Airport avoided a close call with a U.S. Army Black Hawk as the helicopter crossed in front of the flight’s path. CBS Los Angeles reported that the warning system in the cockpit of the United Airlines flight warned the pilot to pull up to avoid hitting the Army Black Hawk helicopter, designated Knife 25. The United Airlines jet then landed safely after the tower reported “traffic no longer a factor.” The Army helicopter was flying out of the joint forces training base at Los Alamitos. According to air traffic control, they asked the pilots, “Are you guys OK?” and the pilots responded that they had a resolution advisory warning in the cockpit to pull up to avoid a collision.
