Five Senators Introduce The FAA SMS Compliance Review Act Of 2026 Five senators have introduced legislation called the FAA SMS Compliance Review Act of 2026 to improve the FAA’s safety oversight and its ability to identify and address aviation safety issues. The bill was introduced following the NTSB hearing on the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) mid-air collision where systematic failure was cited as the cause of the crash between a U.S. Army Blackhawk helicopter and an American Airlines regional jet a year ago. The NTSB found the FAA failed to act appropriately in response to safety data pointing to over 15,000 close-proximity events between helicopter and commercial fixed-wing aircraft at DCA during the approximately three-year period leading up to the tragedy.
