FAA Suspends Use Of Visual Separation Between Helicopters And Airplanes Near Busy Airports The U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has announced the suspension of the use of visual separation between airplanes and helicopters near busy airports after it found an “overreliance” on “see-and-avoid” rules. The general notice (GENOT), which suspends the use of visual separation between airplanes and helicopters, now mandates that air traffic controllers will instead use radar to actively manage these aircraft to keep them separated at specific lateral or vertical distances.“Today, we are proactively mitigating risks before they affect the traveling public,” said FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford.
