First Flight High School’s Student-Built RV-12iS Kit Plane Gets Certification First Flight High School’s student-built airplane is set to take to the skies for its first official flight at 9 a.m. on April 14 at the First Flight Airport—weather permitting, after receiving its Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification. The RV-12iS kit plane, which was built by students in the Wright Flight Academy, was unveiled on Dec. 17, 2025, at the Wright Brothers Memorial in Kill Devil Hills on the 122nd anniversary of the Wright Brothers first powered flight. Dare County Schools announced April 1 that the plane built by First Flight High students is officially flight-worthy.This milestone project began in 2023 as part of the school’s Aviation Program, which teaches real-world aeronautics, engineering, leadership, and teamwork through hands-on learning.
