Pilots Ask Congress to Block Airports from Using ADS-B Data for Billing The battle over ADS-B-based landing fees is still very much kicking, and the GA community is making sure it stays on Congress’s radar. What started as a local dispute in Kissimmee has grown into a national debate over privacy, pilot costs, and who actually gets to decide how ADS-B data is used. A Facebook group originally launched the effort, gathering momentum and thousands of signatures. However, the FAA’s lack of attention to the matter pushed the community to aim higher. Specifically, efforts are centering on lawmakers like Sen. Ted Cruz in hopes of folding the issue into larger aviation legislation. The short-term strategy has been surprisingly effective. Pilots have attempted to boycott airports equipped with Vector, the primary company responsible for facilitating ADS-B landing fees. But, if left unaddressed, pilot safety advocate Don Frano says that landing fees are “just the beginning.”
